Lenten Word of the Day for March 29:Laughter

One of my favorite pictures in my office is of Jesus laughing. I am sure there were many times of thoughtfulness, of concern, and even of intense debate, but there must have been some times of hilarity with Jesus. Let us rejoice with a smile on our face, for this is a part of the image of God which Christians could exhibit more often.

Lord, this day we rejoice, we shout, we laugh: laughter brought about by play, laughter brought on by joy, and laughter brought on by surprise. Sounds of laughter give depth and texture to life, so let us embrace the source from which it comes: You. Amen.

Lenten Word of the Day for March 28: Forgetting

There may be times in our life that we wish we could forget, but there are times when we need to remember. We need to remember not just what was on that grocery list, not what we wanted from the next room, nor even that person's name, but we need to remember that all life comes from God and God wants us to live life to the full. Let us call to mind all that God has done for us when it seems that God has forgotten us, for God has not.

Lord, when we struggle, we forget about your miracles of grace, making something out of nothing, bringing hope out of despair, creating life from death. In our most desperate times, challenge us, empower us, surprise us, and remind us of the joy that is faith. Amen.

Lenten Word of the Day for March 27: Cheating

Have you ever cheated? Have you ever lied? Have you ever stolen? I think most of us hope to say no to one of these, but then it is tax time. Also we give a lot to our company and what is the big deal about that extra long break we take. We don't mean to embellish, but the story sounds so much better. So let's take the log out of our own eye before we complain about the speck in our neighbors, or the person in the other car, or those who are just trying to survive..

Lord, we know what it is to lie, we know what it is to cheat, we know what it is to steal, help us to remember in your economy the ends do not justify the means. Help us to focus on the needs of others more than our own. Help us to be concerned about the suffering, misfortune, and desperation of others. Lord give us heart for those around us today. Amen.
