Lenten Word of the Day for March 27: Cheating

Have you ever cheated? Have you ever lied? Have you ever stolen? I think most of us hope to say no to one of these, but then it is tax time. Also we give a lot to our company and what is the big deal about that extra long break we take. We don't mean to embellish, but the story sounds so much better. So let's take the log out of our own eye before we complain about the speck in our neighbors, or the person in the other car, or those who are just trying to survive..

Lord, we know what it is to lie, we know what it is to cheat, we know what it is to steal, help us to remember in your economy the ends do not justify the means. Help us to focus on the needs of others more than our own. Help us to be concerned about the suffering, misfortune, and desperation of others. Lord give us heart for those around us today. Amen.

Lenten Word of the Day for March 25: Choice

In our lives rarely do we run up against something that is blatantly wrong. But the question is, are we ready when we need to speak up or to act on a person's behalf? Are we prepared to question a sexist joke or a racist comment? Are we willing to offer assistance when someone needs help? It is doing the little things which pave the way for the bigger demands. Are we ready to be proactive and do to others as we would want done to us? Let us choose to walk rightly even when it is only us who would know we failed to act when needed.

Lord, when we see wrong, help us to choose right. When injustice demands silence, let me speak.  When violence seeks apathy, let me act. When busyness produces chaos, let me find peace. For you guide us and give us strength to boldly stand, speak, and act. Amen.

Lenten Word of the Day for March 24: Minds

God gave us minds to think and hearts to follow. We need to think about what we are doing to change the world and we need to listen to the transforming hearts God is giving us to do it. It takes not only our minds to make decisions but it also takes a heart to recognize that which is important and everlasting in this world. Let us do what will last.

People may think we are out of our minds. We see those who are not like us being passed on the street. We see the humanity which you created, but who has become the unfortunate. We care, we stop, we love and do what we can. Lord, we are not out of our minds, for to follow you it means our heart must direct our minds. Help us be the ones to see your will be done. Amen.
