Summer Words

Walk/Hike

When these words were suggested I felt that both were important. So often we talk about walking with the Lord or our journey of faith, yet sometimes it seems to be more of a hike. I mean my path is not always smooth, nor is it always straight. We are close to the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Many of us have walked or hiked through Yosemite. There have been times on those hikes when they have been a bit precarious or interminably long. To me this is more true of my hike of faith. There are times when it seems like it will never end, but then there is the exhilaration of overcoming the difficulties along the trail or even the joy of reaching our destination. This is the true walk of faith, a hike where we have vistas that are unparalleled and a sense of accomplishment when we make it around each new corner or over each new hill.

Lord, help me to take your hand when the tough times come. Help me to offer my hand to those around me when the hike seems like it will never end. Lord, help me to receive the strength I need to continue on, the hopefulness to make it around one more bend, and the joy of looking back on a journey well traveled. Amen.

Trust

Yesterday I preached about our need to bold in our faith. We need to be willing to step out of our comfort zone and be the disciples God calls us to be. That can’t happen of course unless you trust God to be there for you. I think we all have some trust issues. I think we all have experienced betrayal at some point. But scripture points out that God is there for us. God not only has our destination decided, but God’s presence is with us even now. I am again overwhelmed by all the good things I experience each day given to me by God, that I don’t deserve. So when things don’t go well I need to trust God will see me through and some good will come out of it. I am excited about what is coming next are you?

Lord, help us to trust you. You have held us in your hands in the past and you will hold us in the future as well. But sometimes we need to just trust you in our present. Thank you for being there for us even when we don’t acknowledge you as our God. Lord, we can trust you so help us to do just that. Amen.

Together

Today we gather together as a Session, the ruling body of our church, to plan, prepare and pursue a new school year in the life of our church. We believe that together we can better discern the direction God has for us as a body of believers. We also believe that as we offer each other insight we can offer encouragement and we can offer to assist each other in our called ministries. As I have said before “Church Matters.” Jesus did not mentor one individual at a time, nor did he pick only one follower to carry on his work. Jesus picked a group of people to follow him and taught them not only how to work together, but how to be a partner with God as well. We are all unique individuals, but how much more we can accomplish when we work together. Let us gather together tomorrow to celebrate our partnership with each other and with God.

Lord, you gave us a family to support, encourage and challenge each other in our calling. Help us to find the best way to work together and to celebrate that which we have been called to do. It is so much more wonderful to share our life with others than to walk this road alone. Help us to continue to respect each person individually as we seek to work together to redeem this world as your partner here on earth. Amen.
