Summer Words

Today we gather together as a Session, the ruling body of our church, to plan, prepare and pursue a new school year in the life of our church. We believe that together we can better discern the direction God has for us as a body of believers. We also believe that as we offer each other insight we can offer encouragement and we can offer to assist each other in our called ministries. As I have said before “Church Matters.” Jesus did not mentor one individual at a time, nor did he pick only one follower to carry on his work. Jesus picked a group of people to follow him and taught them not only how to work together, but how to be a partner with God as well. We are all unique individuals, but how much more we can accomplish when we work together. Let us gather together tomorrow to celebrate our partnership with each other and with God.

Lord, you gave us a family to support, encourage and challenge each other in our calling. Help us to find the best way to work together and to celebrate that which we have been called to do. It is so much more wonderful to share our life with others than to walk this road alone. Help us to continue to respect each person individually as we seek to work together to redeem this world as your partner here on earth. Amen.

Summer Words

We just finished driving over 1700 miles from California to Texas. At the beginning of the week it seemed a daunting task, but once done it didn’t seem to take that long. Sure we took our time, four days in fact, and we had a few amazing events; a prayer garden and a take and run out the grocery store (we weren’t the takers), both of these were in LA; a got-a-find-a-bathroom-real-quick while on a barren stretch through New Mexico (which we found); and an amazing series of cloud formations in the sky in Texas. The good part of this tired is the sleep which rejuvenated us each night so we could continue on the road the next morning. There will be times when we will get tired because of all our activity, but God gives us rest and a new day. We are grateful to be here.

Lord, you give us desires which lead us to all corners of the world and yet everywhere we go you are with us at that place. We are so grateful for the freedom to travel and the resources to find new places to settle in your world. Thank you for keeping us safe on our journey and reminding us that wherever we go you are there with us. We can never out pace you nor can we ever run away from you. Help us to never want to shut you out of our lives because wherever we are you make the experience so much richer. Thank you for being our God and calling us to be your global people. Amen.

Summer Words

I think too often we get sucked into the thinking that we need to do everything on our own. That is so far from the truth. I don’t know any leader in the bible who fulfilled their mission on their own. Even Jesus relied on the three disciples, Peter, James, and John to support him in presence, on the Mount of Transfiguration; prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane, and in partnership, as they fished for people throughout Judea during his time of ministry. We need family, friends, and future colleagues to help us live our calling. We need support ourselves as well as being a support for others.

Lord, remind us that we don’t have to go it alone. Others need us as much as we need them. Help us to be open to the help that is offered to us, especially in those times when we feel helpless. This will also encourage others to receive help when needed. We are all in this together so let us not only give support to others, but let’s receive it as well. Amen.
