Summer Words

Interesting word for this week. I would have never thought of using this word when thinking about faith, yet sunshine is a word that conjures up health, happiness, and hope in my mind. It is the opposite of gloom or darkness. It is a word which speaks to us of God’s presence in all its glory. It is a word which reminds us that even in the moments of our life when the sun is blotted out by the moon that sun will shine again, because God is God of life.

Lord, help us to never be so overwhelmed by the darkness of events that we forget who brings us light. You are there to bring us joy in the morning, like a sunrise after a stormy night. You are there to bring us rays of light through the dark clouds which threaten our well being. You are not only there around us, but you are here with us. Thank you for the love for us. Amen.

Summer Words

This is not my favorite word. I would even say it is down the line toward my least favorite word ever. Yet it is like serving in that since we all serve somebody, either ourselves or someone else, so I think we are all have to submit to someone or some ideal. So why not submit to the author and creator of the universe? Why not submit to someone who has your best interests in mind? In our faith we believe that God wants the best for us and also wants to give us the opportunity to partner with him in this world. So again, I tell myself, even though it may be hard, that I want God to direct my life, and I will follow, as best I can. How about you?

Lord, help me to hear your voice even when the words you speak to me may rub me the wrong way. Help me to be willing to follow your direction even if it means being silent when I want to speak or speak when I want to be silent. Help me to offer hope to the hopeless, friendship to the friendless, and love to the unlovable, even when they are part of my family. You are the only one who knows the best for us and the world, so help us to partner with you to being your grace to a world that so desperately needs it. Amen.

Summer Words

This is something we can’t touch, but certainly can influence our lives. There are times when we feel down, but for some unexpected reason have a sense of hope. There are times when we feel overwhelmed, but then sense encouragement. There are times when we feel alone, but then sense a presence more than are own. There is a spirit in each of us which seems to connect with a spirit outside of us. The spirit we seek is that of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of God accompanies us, encourages us, and gives us a vision that peace will come to us in the end. The spirit which we sense in us is a spirit which God has breathed into us. This spirit finds rest and peace in the presence of God. Let us seek God’s spirit and know he is always there for us, all we have to do is listen.

Lord, we are so used to bumping into the things of this world that we forget your presence is seen with the heart and not the eyes. Help us to not to let our bruises distract us from the true Spirit of your presence. Help us to listen with our heart and be open to the moving of your Spirit in our lives. We are more than a physical body and we look forward, someday, to be completely free celebrating our spirit with yours. Amen.
