Significance

We all want to be recognized or acknowledged. I try to say “Hi” to folks when ever I make eye-contact, just so they know someone has seen them. Even when I am deep in contemplation while walking I try to make sure others know they are a “masterpiece” created by God. Sometimes that simple word brings a special brightness to their eyes, others don’t show they have even heard me, but I know at least I have given them a special acknowledgement from one of God’s creatures. Sometimes a friendly “Hi” is the only good word some people will hear that day.

Lord, help me to pass on your special blessing to all whom I encounter this day. Help those people to whom I speak hear your blessing and know they are loved by the creator of this universe. Help us all to know that it is not what we do that gives us significance, but that we are uniquely sculpted by the author of all life and that gives each of us a special place in this world.

Shalom

This word is most often translated as peace. It also means wholeness or sometimes fulfillment. It is when we are fulfilled that we most often experience peace. Shalom is also used as a word in parting, used as a blessing to others as we go our different ways. Surely this is what we want  for ourselves and also for those we love. Yet God has called us to be engaged in this world and I believe God wants fulfillment, wholeness, peace for the world. So we should also strive to wish peace on all with whom we engage.

Lord, help me to be an instrument of peace. Help me to focus on what you would have me do and say that would further bring peace. It is not easy to be a peacemaker in this world, but as we strive to bring greater peace to this world let us not stop also praying for justice. Final peace and justice will govern this world when you come again, help us to keep praying for that to happen. Amen.

Service

There is a time to rest and there is a time to serve. There is a time to receive from others and there is a time to give to others. It is not always easy to know what needs to be done, but sometimes it is harder to know when it is time to do it. As I have matured, yes I think that is happening, I have tried not to step in every time I see a need. I believe we need to let others take that step or we need to sometimes let others see the results of an action. I still think we are here on this planet to partner with others in making life more enjoyable, more stimulating, and more in line with the creation God has in mind. Yet, there is a time to be active and a time to rest from action.

Lord, help me to be ready to serve, but also to choose wisely when service is needed. You said you came not to be served, but to serve so let us make service a priority in our life. Help us to find new creative and imaginative ways to serve others, and you, in this world. Amen.
