Summer Words

There is a time to rest and there is a time to serve. There is a time to receive from others and there is a time to give to others. It is not always easy to know what needs to be done, but sometimes it is harder to know when it is time to do it. As I have matured, yes I think that is happening, I have tried not to step in every time I see a need. I believe we need to let others take that step or we need to sometimes let others see the results of an action. I still think we are here on this planet to partner with others in making life more enjoyable, more stimulating, and more in line with the creation God has in mind. Yet, there is a time to be active and a time to rest from action.

Lord, help me to be ready to serve, but also to choose wisely when service is needed. You said you came not to be served, but to serve so let us make service a priority in our life. Help us to find new creative and imaginative ways to serve others, and you, in this world. Amen.

Self Control

This is one of the fruits of the spirit found in Galatians 5. It certainly is something we all could use a bit more of, don’t you think, unless you are an introvert. According to the Myers-Briggs assessment I am considered an extrovert in a public setting, I like being up front and talking to a crowd. But when I am in private I have more introverted tendencies. So when I long to speak in public I am praying, “Lord, help me to be patient, practice self-control, and speak only when prompted by you.”  When in a small private gathering I am praying, “Lord, help me to engage with these people and not just withdraw into myself.” What are you praying?

Lord, help us to be more attuned to your prompting. Help us to be quiet and listen when others are sharing. Help us to be more vocal when someone needs to hear a word of encouragement. Help us to daily listen to your words to us through, prayer, reading scripture, and through the words of others. Help us to experience self-control. Amen.

Summer Words

Why is it that we never seem to find what we are looking for? Was it we are still thirsty? Was it we are still hungry? There seems to be something within in us that longs for something other than what we have or at least for more than what we have. Maybe instead we long for someone we don’t have. We long to have that so elusive satisfying relationship where we are cherished, we are honored, we are satisfied. Oh, we have moments of such a relationship or we have a glimpse of it anyway, but perhaps instead of seeking for someone to love us we need to focus on loving others. We have plenty of opportunities for deep relationships, but I think in our search we need to spend more time being the person who honors and cherishes others, instead of always expecting others to do that to us.

Lord, you gave within us a desire for more. There is nothing wrong with that, but help us not only get more, but help us to give more. Help us to be the person who seeks to love others, not just the person who seeks to be loved. Our searching shows we are not content and that can be a good thing, but let us try to be more of the one who loves as opposed as one who is still looking for love. Amen.
