Summer Words

Honesty

At first glance this is something we all commend. Yet can we go through a full day without being dishonest? Are we honest at stop signs? Are we honest when someone needs a compliment? Are we honest when someone asks us how we really are (How are you?)? Perhaps a better word to have first on our list is compassion. Compassion not toward our self, but compassion toward others. If we are dishonest, is it because we are trying to avoid the consequences or is it because we are trying to care for another. I don’t advocate dishonesty, but if we are being painfully honest who is truly suffering?

Lord, help us to be honest with ourselves. Lord, help us to be honest with you. Lord, help us to better discern when we are dishonest, is it to save face or is it to help another? Lord, help us to hear your voice and be more concerned about honesty with ourselves, that asking others to be completely honest with us. Amen.

Summer Words

Heaven/Heavenly

We often think of this as a place where we have no worries, no pain, and are overwhelmed by its beauty. I think of it most often when I am in the Sierras and have no obligations weighing on my shoulders. Yet I also think of it when I am in a small group of friends and laughter and closeness abound. It is good to think of these things, but it is also important that we forget not that we have a calling here on earth to live out the grace and love God has given us. I wonder what our calling would be in the all heavenly place?

Lord, help us to look forward to a time and a place where we have no cares, but also to a place where we can celebrate everyone we meet. Help us to anticipate the wonder of your beauty and to be able to bask in your presence, but remind us of our calling here on earth. We can look forward to a time in the future, but let us not abandon the present. Amen.

Summer Words

Heart

This is such an important word. In Hebrew thought this is the core of our physical being. There is no separation between heart and mind, it is one and the same. Therefore if we love with all our heart, both God and neighbor, we are including our thoughts and our emotions. This is also the organ that keeps our body alive. It is the circulatory system which gets the oxygen where it needs to go, from the lungs to the brain and to all the extremities. If our heart is not functioning well then the whole body suffers. So it is with our spiritual life, if the heart needs to be restored or rejuvenated or redeemed then the body is not fully alive. But when the heart is made new, then the rest of our body is given new life.

Lord, help our heart to be made new every morning. Help your love to permeate not only our heart, but our whole body so we can be fully functioning witnesses for you. Help us to be the example that will draw others to your redeeming love and share with others the way in which you have been our redeemer. Help us to be fully alive experiencing and celebrating our new hearts. Amen.
