Summer Words

Anticipation, expectation and excitement are all words that set me on edge, but discovery is something just waiting to burst through the seams of life. Discovery is about something that is already with us, but just waiting to be revealed. It is something that will change, no rock our world. It is something that could change the course of the universe. What is it that is just waiting to be discovered? Is it a gem stone hidden in the murkiness of the earth? Is it an unexpected talent honed to perfection waiting for just the right moment to be revealed? Is it something or someone who is so much more than you can imagine? It is all these. We are the perfectly formed person God has made us to be, we just need to see it and celebrate our presence on this earth.

Lord, help us to realize that you have made us to be just the right person for just the right moment with just the right beauty to bring glory to your name. We are the ones you have called to burst forth upon this world with all that we are and all that we can be we just need your eyes to see it. Lord, help us to discover who we truly are, a beloved creature made for this time and this place to be your person in this universe. Praise be to our creator, amen.

I think the opposite of being disconnected is not being connected but of being possessed. When we are overly connected to a person or to an ideal we let that person or that ideal dictate our actions, which may not always be healthy. Sometimes being disconnected from our wants, possessions, or relationships can help us keep a proper balance with who we are and who we are becoming. I would say that the only relationship to which we can never be overly connected is that relationship we have with God. It is listening to God and following God which helps us operate in this world with a healthy view of possessions, ideals, and other relationships. That is, if we seek first to grow in our relationship with God we will keep all our other connections in the proper perspective. Sometimes being unplugged, being disconnected, can help us be plugged in to that which is truly important.

Lord, help us to keep connected to you at all times. That connection is one which will help us to maintain a healthy perspective on all of life. We know that you want the best for us and you want to help us become who we are truly called to be, but sometimes we get so focused on our connection to this world we forget that we are designed for eternity and not just the here and now. Thank you for keeping you connection to us and help us keep our connection to you. Amen.

What is the difference between a leader and a follower? I think one thing that differentiates these two is calling, but I also think a good leader is willing to be a good disciple, a disciple of someone they respect. In fact I think when leaders no longer consider themselves disciples then they have lost their way. There is only one leader of all and none of us are it. Whenever I consider following someone I look to see if they are willing to also be a follower, not that they never depend on their own leadership to make decisions, but that they are willing to modify their behavior if they learn something new that is beneficial to those they lead. So let us strive to be leaders when that is our call, but never forget we need to also be disciples.

Lord, help me to discern when my leadership is needed and when I need to be a disciple. Help me to never forget you are the only one who fulfills the leadership role at all times. And when I strive to be your disciple, help me to be fully committed to following you. Amen.
