Rejoice in the Lord always.

I will say it again: Rejoice!

Philippians 4:4

Yesterday was a great day of worship. We had “Music Sunday,” which means our Music Director arranged Choir pieces, Praise Band pieces, and some special music by two accomplished duets to give praise during this Advent Season.

It was certainly a day for which we could rejoice. Even though we are still dealing with an unusually high infection rate here in California we were able to celebrate the God who is our Savior and Lord.

The creativity Dean used to provide such a great day of music is again a testament to the amazing staff we have here at John Knox Presbyterian Church. Some of the music was prerecorded so there wasn’t such a large group of people in the sanctuary. The choir members were socially distanced on the chancel and were masked with Christmas masks. The Praise Band was also socially distanced and still provided excellent sound and singing from their various locations. The duets included an original song and a traditional carol.

Of course our sound and video crew made it all happen seamlessly including a quick change of order to further enhance the Children’s message. And we had an amazing teacher of ASL helping us learn how to sign “Joy to the World, our Lord has come.”

And that was just in the morning. Later at 5:00 pm we had a car-caroling-karaoke in our parking lot. We had about twenty-five cars with everyone staying inside their vehicle, but led, again by our Music Director, through an FM station in song. We sang about fifteen carols and we were able to honk our gratitude for this opportunity to gather together, socially distanced, but all singing the same carols.

It was truly a great event and one which again used the assistance and expertise of our sound people, all volunteers, organized by our Family Ministries Director and MC’d by our Music Director.

Finally, that evening our Music Director again led an Adult Education event on teaching us about the history of some of the more contemporary carols, those from the 18th and 19th Century. After learning about each one we then sang a couple of verses, the Director playing on the keyboard and singing the tune, while we, who were on zoom, sang with the mute button on.

I think this advent season will definitely be well remembered for ages and we all look forward to gathering together in person again, unmasked. But let me say that the innovation of our staff and the willingness of the participants to try new things has made this Advent a glorious opportunity to praise our God.

I hope that you are able to keep yourselves safe and though this nasty infection may strike some of us I hope and pray we still can find an opportunity to praise God for the many blessings we have received and are continuing to receive this Christmas time.

Praying for continued rejoicing with you,

    Pastor Randy
