Community in Action October 9, 2020

Every once in a while I become concerned because some Christians fail to consider that science could be a gift from God. We have been given minds to think and insights that are full of truth that aren’t in the Bible. Just like the person begging for God to save them in a flood and when the neighbor went by offering to help, the boat went by offering assistance, the helicopter let down a rope and the person responded each time, “I am waiting for God to save me.”

When this person met God in the eternal home and asked why God didn’t save him, God’s answer was, "I sent you a neighbor, a boat, and a helicopter, but you refused their help.” So God sends us new insights and science to help us negotiate this life, but if we refuse to accept it because it is not in the Bible or Jesus didn’t say it then I think we are turning our backs on God’s gifts to us.

I am bringing this up because I came across an article in my email today with the title, “Battling Depression the Jesus Way.” In the body of the article it said, “Depression comes from unbelief when one does not use any spiritual warfare to fight it and does not put on the armor of God.” This suggests that the person battling depression is at fault. It is their lack of faith which has caused their current state of consciousness.

It is true sometimes we can get down and fail to see all the good things God has done for us and we are able to do something about that. It is also true that if we don’t spend time with God, be it through prayer, scripture, or fellowship with other believers we will be more susceptible to temptation. But there are also times when people, through no fault of their own, have a chemical imbalance in their bodies. There are times when we may suffer from PTSD, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. There are times when emotional baggage from the past is just too overwhelming and we need professional help to deal with the symptoms and the root cause.

So know this, God loves you and if you are struggling to cope with life, God would want you to seek professional help. Yes, there are counselors, who are Christians, who can help and there are even counselors who aren’t Christian who can help. Don’t struggle alone, seek assistance. The first time God says something is “not good” is found in Genesis 2:18a, “The LORD God said, ‘It is not good for the man (human being) to be alone.’”

We were made for community. And we believe God is fully active in our lives today. God did not just make the world and leave it to us to make or break it. There are many gifted people out there who have skills, those things which practice makes “perfect,” and talents, those things which we have inborn in us, to help us become the creation God made us to be.

Do not let others overburden you with guilt, that is the Holy Spirit’s job not theirs.

Seeking freedom from the past to live fully in the present with you,

    Pastor Randy
