Amor Founder, Gayla Congdon, created the Women of Strength Impact Trip for women from all around the world to come together and build a home alongside a family in South Africa. Not only is a complete home (maybe two) built, but culture is shared through Zulu cooking and dancing. The history of Apartheid in South Africa is taught by those who experienced it. Children, whose families have been lost to AIDS, are ministered to. When women come together and serve together, everyone is stronger.

This summer, 75 women met in Delmas, South Africa.  55 women from the US, several women from the UK and Australia, and 19 South African women worked together. Five women from John Knox Presbyterian Church  participated: Sue Fox, Laura and Carolyn Bolin, Irene Brewster and Joan McGrady-Beach.  They listenined and learned from the South African women alongside whom they served.

They stated at Ebenezer Farm ( in Delmas, South Africa.  Our work was in a nearby community where we built  two houses and helped with a children’s outreach for 200 local children.

Prior to the five days of building a house/helping with the children’s program, we spent time in Soweto where we visited the Apartheid Museum and participated in an outreach to families that have been affected by AIDS. Ikageng Community Development Center ( in Soweto helps the poor, vulnerable and orphaned to regain control over their lives by teaching life skills and providing effective education and health services. Ikageng offers educational, nutritional, health and psychosocial support to AIDS orphans, many of whom are children who are heads of household.

Our Schedule was:

July 20 Arrive in Johannesburg, South Africa
July 21 Welcome, training, and rest at the farm
July 22 Apartheid Museum, shopping and dinner in Soweto
July 23 Soweto outreach to families affected by AIDS
